A Costa Rica vacation is more enjoyable for its variety of attractions

The biodiversity of Costa Rica gives justice to its translation as a “rich coast.” However, when it comes to mammals, the country does not have a large quantity as compared to other countries. Of the 200 species of recorded mammals, half are different varieties of bats. Mammals may not be as abundant as the flora and fauna and birds in Costa Rica, but those that thrive in this place are still fascinating exotic animals.

When you go on a Costa Rica vacation, you will find that there are four species of monkeys in the country, descendants of the monkey found in Asia and Africa. The cebus monkey is also known as the capuchin which is regarded as the smartest primate in this area. The capuchins eat a nutritious varied diet consisting of lizards, eggs, insects and some molluscs it finds on the beach and splits open using rocks.

You can arrange to stay in The Costa Rican Condo for a comfortable and luxurious Costa Rica vacation and then make arrangements for excursions to visit the Santa Rosa and Manuel Antonio parks where the cebus monkeys live. Their habitat can both be wet lowlands and dry forests.

There are also spider monkeys sporting orange or copper fur which are considered one of nature’s natural stuntmen. They swing back and forth amidst the branches of trees with their long tails and limbs. The spider monkeys are very social during the night because they need the protection of large groups. However, they remain solitary during daylight hours. It is unfortunate that human invasion and deforestation caused a huge decrease in the spider monkey’s population.

The smallest monkeys in Costa Rica are the squirrel monkeys which are commonly known as “titi.” They are very gregarious that they can be found foraging with bunches of capuchin monkeys. The usual habitat of the squirrel monkeys is the Southern Pacific lowlands. Another primate found in Costa Rica and considered the biggest in the area is the howler monkey which is also the loudest. It howls during the day and can weigh as much as 12 pounds although their diet is mainly leaves and greens.

Other mammals found in Costa Rica are the sloth with their flat face, beady eyes, long arms and strange looking fur. There are two kinds of sloth in Costa Rica, the nocturnal two-toed sloth and the three-toed sloth which remains active even during daytime. The strange looking fur of the sloth is actually covered with algae and in itself is home to colonies of beetles, insects and moths.

There are also tapirs or “dantas” in Costa Rica. Tapirs look like a miniature hippopotamus with a small trunk and pig-like features. Tapirs can be found wading in swampy areas plucking leaves from plants that are their main diet. The Tamandua is another interesting mammal which is the anteater of Costar Rica. They feed entirely on termites and ants and they don’t have any teeth. The sloth, the tapir and the anteater are just some of the more exotic animals you will find in your Costa Rica vacation. You can arrange for a sightseeing tour to view these animals in their native habitat while staying in the luxurious and comfortable Hotel Costa Rica.
