Arenal Volcano

Have you ever had the opportunity of standing atop one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world? Arenal Volcano, one of the major volcanoes in Costa Rica, launches itself at least 1,633 meters (5,358 feet) into the air. Also known as “Pan de Azucar”, “Volcan Rio Frio”, and “Volcan Costa Rica”, Arenal Volcano is located in the center of the Arenal Volcano National Park, just southwest of San Carlos Canton, Costa Rica.

Surprising to many, visitors to this silent giant can see fiery red rocks tumble down out of the mouth of the 140 foot crater located in its center, ejecting columns of ash towards the sky. Sitting silent for over 400 years, Arenal exploded in 1968, destroying the small town of Tabacon. Ever since then, the volcano has frequently stayed active – however, never having a eruption like in 1968.

The best time to view this massive creature is early morning or late in the day. During the mid afternoon hours, the clouds move into the area, making it difficult to see the peak of the volcano. Take a tour of Arenal Volcano, or, experience one of the many activities Costa Rica offers that is close to the volcano itself. Stay at the Hotel Costa Rica and you are a short driving distance from many tourist and vacation activites. From the Los Perdidos hot springs to a horseback tour, Arenal Volcano National Park Tour, or a visiting the Cano Negro wildlife reserve, this is one of the most attractive places to sightsee in Costa Rica.
