Costa Rican People Unique Traits
The Costa Rican people possess unique traits from their profound and conscious self-image. This defines their identity and distinct behavior as individuals and as a nation. The Costa Rican people feel that they are distinguished from their neighboring countries by their “whiteness.” Relatively, they also lack an indigenous culture. Ticos generally consider themselves Costa Ricans first and foremost. They think of themselves as Latin Americans or Central Americans only as an afterthought.
Boasting in Costa Rica is generally frowned upon, and they act with humility and meekness regardless of their wealth or status. However, there has been a rise in young nouveau riche that has been changing these distinct traits. It is fortunate that there are still many Ticos who conform to the behavior and comments dictated to quedar bier, or the desire to leave a good impression. They are much like the traditional English people in the fact that they do not want to embarrass themselves and they do not desire to appear vulgar, rude or unhelpful. This behavior sometimes results in hypocritical comments and compliments like saying “nice hairdo,” when in fact they think completely the opposite.
The country is a nice place to visit for a Costa Rica vacation as violence is extremely rare. The Catholic religious fervor prevalent in Mexico and Central American countries is also not present here. It has always been said that Ticos are law-abiding and respects their laws and have faith in them, including the state institution. Ticos get furious when something threatens their liberty or that of the nation or impinges on their rights. However there has been worrying statistics on crime and theft in recent years, suggesting that there is now the different, modern type of tico, influenced by the culture of violence now happening around the globe. But attempts to have a modern police force with all the equipment that goes with it, stirs up the population and editorial columns print protests and declaration of outrage citing militarism.
Democracy is most treasured in Costa Rica and they are proud of achieving the ideal of personal liberty which they cherish. During the eve of Independence Day, Costa Rican people show their pride in their accomplishments regarding liberty. Everyone sings their national anthem, causing a halt to the activities in the whole nation.
Even though most Costa Rican people are still strongly oriented around their traditional values, many of the younger generations are faltering under the onslaught of modernity, foreign influences and social change. Previously unheard of public drunkenness and drug abuse have been manifesting its ugly head. Burglary and theft have also been recorded on the rise.
However, Costa Rican people hold on to their identity and the family and village community remains the cornerstone of society. The home and the family is still the center of social life where sons and daughters remain in the family fold until they get married.
